What is Nano Banana 2.1?
Nano Banana 2.1 is Google's image generation and editing model, built on Gemini 3.6 Flash and released on October 6, 2026 as the follow-up to Nano Banana 2. Google rolled it out across the Gemini app, AI Mode in Search, AI Studio, and Flow on the same day. The update is about editing: changes land where you ask for them, and the people and products in your image keep looking like themselves after several rounds of edits. Output sizes stay at 1K, 2K, and 4K, picked with one resolution parameter.
What's new in Nano Banana 2.1
More precise edits
Ask for a change to one part of an image and the rest stays put. Fewer rerolls to fix a background that drifted when you only wanted a new jacket.
Steadier subjects across edits
Faces, characters, and products hold their identity through repeated edits, which matters for series work like catalog shots or a recurring mascot.
Better infographics
Google tuned it for infographic layout and factual accuracy, so charts and explainer graphics need fewer manual fixes.
Better-looking layouts
Google tuned it for cleaner compositions and more polished visual assets, so first drafts need less art direction.
What Nano Banana 2.1 can do
#5 on the Text-to-Image Arena
Nano Banana 2.1 ranks fifth on Arena's Text-to-Image leaderboard at 1328, from 5,312 votes. Only GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, GPT Image 2.5 Flare, GPT Image 2 and MAI Image 2.6 sit above it, and it is the top Google model on the board.
Biggest jump: keeping several characters consistent

#6 on the Image Edit Arena
On Arena's Image Edit leaderboard it ranks sixth at 1428, from 12,985 votes, level with MAI Image 2.6 (1428) and ahead of Seedream 5.0 Pro, Nano Banana 2, and every Nano Banana Pro variant.
Best for
Iterative editing
Upload an image, change one thing, then another. 2.1 keeps the untouched parts stable between turns.
Character and mascot series
Pass the same reference set every call to keep a character consistent across a campaign.
Ecommerce product scenes
Put a product shot into new settings without the label or shape changing between variants.
Social and ad variants
Square, vertical, and widescreen cuts of one idea at 1K, with a 4K master when you need it.
High-volume generation
Cheaper per image than Nano Banana 2 at every size, so bulk jobs cost less on the newer model.
Use cases
Run a product catalog refresh by passing each SKU photo as a reference and prompting for a styled scene, then edit the background per marketplace without the product changing. Build a recurring brand character: lock its look with a few reference images, then generate new poses and settings every week. For ad testing, generate one concept in 1:1, 9:16, and 16:9 at 1K, pick the winner, and render it again at 4K for print.

Limitations
Google's model card lists these weak spots: small text often comes out blurry, character consistency between input and output is good but not perfect, masked edits only partly follow the instruction, the model sometimes confuses where things sit in the frame, and its 3D reasoning is limited. Keep text-heavy designs to large type, and check fine print before shipping.
On Unifically, 2.1 runs at five fixed aspect ratios (1:1, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 3:4) plus auto, with up to 10 reference images per call.
