Nano Banana 2.1 vs Nano Banana 2 API: Pricing, Benchmarks, and Which to Use
Nano Banana 2.1 costs from $0.02 per image on Unifically against $0.034 for Nano Banana 2, and ranks #5 on Arena text-to-image against #11.
Google released Nano Banana 2.1 on October 6, 2026, as the follow-up to Nano Banana 2, and marked the older model deprecated on the same day. It went live on Unifically on October 7 as google/nano-banana-2.1. This post answers the three questions a developer has right now: what changed, what each model costs per image, and whether to move your calls today. Short version: on Unifically the new model is both cheaper and higher-ranked, which almost never happens with an upgrade.
TL;DR: Nano Banana 2.1 costs $0.02 / $0.03 / $0.045 per image at 1K / 2K / 4K on Unifically, against $0.034 / $0.051 / $0.076 for Nano Banana 2. It ranks #5 on Arena text-to-image (1328) and #6 on image edit (1428), ahead of Nano Banana 2 at #11 and #14. Our call: make 2.1 your default for new work and migrate existing calls. Keep Nano Banana 2 only for panorama ratios (1:4, 4:1, 1:8, 8:1, 21:9) or seeded, reproducible output, which our 2.1 endpoint does not offer.
Key takeaways
- Nano Banana 2.1 (
gemini-nano-banana-2.1at Google,google/nano-banana-2.1on Unifically) was released and made generally available on October 6, 2026. - On Unifically, Nano Banana 2.1 is cheaper than Nano Banana 2 at every size: $0.02 vs $0.034 at 1K, $0.03 vs $0.051 at 2K, $0.045 vs $0.076 at 4K.
- On Arena (October 6, 2026), Nano Banana 2.1 scores 1328 in text-to-image and 1428 in image edit, 67 and 41 points above Nano Banana 2. Both 2.1 scores are still preliminary.
- Google lists Nano Banana 2 (
gemini-3.1-flash-image) as deprecated with no shutdown date announced, per its deprecations page updated October 7, 2026. - Nano Banana 2.1 on Unifically takes 1K, 2K or 4K, five aspect ratios plus
auto, and up to 10 reference images. It has noseedparameter. - New Unifically accounts start with $0.50 of balance, enough for a first batch of Nano Banana 2.1 images at 1K.
What changed in Nano Banana 2.1
Google's model page lists the changes over Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image):
- Better visual quality and realism at 1K, 2K and 4K output.
- Better prompt adherence and multi-turn character consistency, so a person or product keeps its look across repeated edits.
- Better text rendering and infographic layout.
- Multi-image fusion from up to 14 references at Google (up to 4 characters and 10 objects). Unifically accepts up to 10 per call.
- A fix for tiling artifacts on wide and panoramic ratios at 2K and 4K.
- Configurable thinking levels (minimal, medium, high) and grounding with Google Web and Image Search at Google.
Google's launch post also names "mask-based editing" as a headline gain. The API pages do not expose a mask parameter, so read that as a quality claim about how precisely edits land, not a new input field.
Google's own model page lists the limits too: no function calling, no structured outputs, no context caching.
Nano Banana 2.1 vs Nano Banana 2 pricing
Both models bill per generated image, with the size picked by one resolution parameter. Prices below are our current rates, refreshed from the live price list on every deploy.
| Resolution | Nano Banana 2.1 | Nano Banana 2 | Nano Banana Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1K | $0.02 | $0.034 | $0.07 |
| 2K | $0.03 | $0.051 | $0.07 |
| 4K | $0.045 | $0.076 | $0.12 |
Nano Banana 2.1 is the cheapest of the three at every size. A 4K image from 2.1 costs $0.045, against $0.051 for a 2K image from Nano Banana 2. For high volume drafting, Nano Banana 2 Lite is still a flat $0.02 at 1K only, against $0.02 for 2.1 at 1K, so we'd reach for 2.1 unless you need Lite's wider ratio list.
Failed generations are never charged, on either model. Pay per use, no subscription, and your balance does not expire.
Benchmarks: Arena text-to-image and image edit
Arena ranks image models from blind human votes. Values below were read from arena.ai on October 7, 2026 (board last updated October 6).

| Model | Text-to-image rank | Text-to-image score | Image edit rank | Image edit score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst | 1 | 1425 | 1 | 1524 |
| GPT Image 2 (medium) | 3 | 1383 | 3 | 1462 |
| Nano Banana 2.1 | 5 | 1328 | 6 | 1428 |
| Nano Banana 2 (web search) | 11 | 1261 | 14 | 1387 |
| Nano Banana Pro (2K) | 16 | 1248 | 12 | 1390 |
Three things stand out:
- 2.1 beats Nano Banana 2 by a wide margin in generation. A 67-point gap in text-to-image is large for a point release. The edit gain is smaller at 41 points.
- The cheap model now outscores the expensive one. Nano Banana 2.1 leads Nano Banana Pro by 80 points in text-to-image and 38 in edit, at less than a third of Pro's 1K price.
- It is not the best image model. GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst leads by about 97 points in text-to-image and 96 in edit. If you want the top of the board today, GPT Image 2 is the highest-ranked model you can call on Unifically.
The 2.1 scores are marked preliminary: 5,312 text-to-image votes and 12,985 edit votes, against 59,779 and 229,782 for Nano Banana 2. Expect them to move a few points as votes come in.

This is the one place Nano Banana 2 still wins. Google's headline fix for 2.1 is panorama quality, but our 2.1 endpoint serves five fixed ratios plus auto. If you build banners, strips, or vertical scrollers at 1:8, 8:1, or 21:9, stay on Nano Banana 2 for those jobs. The same goes for pipelines that depend on a seed to reproduce an exact image.
How to call Nano Banana 2.1
Both models use the same async task endpoint. POST the job, then poll the task or pass a callback_url.
curl -X POST https://api.unifically.com/v1/tasks \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
-d '{
"model": "google/nano-banana-2.1",
"input": {
"prompt": "Product photo of a matte black water bottle on a wet slate surface, soft window light",
"aspect_ratio": "4:3",
"resolution": "2K",
"image_urls": ["https://files.unifically.com/your-product-shot.png"]
}
}'
const API = 'https://api.unifically.com';
const headers = {
Authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.UNIFICALLY_API_KEY}`,
'Content-Type': 'application/json',
};
const { data } = await fetch(`${API}/v1/tasks`, {
method: 'POST',
headers,
body: JSON.stringify({
model: 'google/nano-banana-2.1',
input: { prompt: 'Flat-lay of a coffee brand kit on warm linen', resolution: '1K' },
}),
}).then((r) => r.json());
while (true) {
await new Promise((r) => setTimeout(r, 2000));
const task = await fetch(`${API}/v1/tasks/${data.task_id}`, { headers }).then((r) => r.json());
if (task.data.status === 'completed') { console.log(task.data.output); break; }
if (task.data.status === 'failed') throw new Error(JSON.stringify(task.data));
}
Add "dry_run": true to the request body to get the price back without running the job. Full parameters are in the Nano Banana 2.1 docs.
Migrating from Nano Banana 2
For most calls the switch is one string. Change google/nano-banana-2 to google/nano-banana-2.1 and check three things:
- Aspect ratio. If you send anything outside 1:1, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, or 3:4, either map it to the nearest supported ratio or keep that job on Nano Banana 2.
match_input_imagebecomesauto. - Seed. 2.1 ignores reproducibility by seed. If your tests compare pixel-identical outputs, keep those tests on Nano Banana 2.
- Reference count. Trim requests to 10 reference images or fewer.
Then re-run a handful of your real prompts at 1K. At $0.02 per image, a 50-prompt side-by-side costs $1.
Is Nano Banana 2 being shut down?
Not yet. Google's changelog of October 6, 2026 marks gemini-3.1-flash-image as deprecated and tells developers to migrate to gemini-nano-banana-2.1. Its deprecations page, updated October 7, 2026, says "no shutdown date announced". Some launch coverage reported an October 29 shutdown; we could not find that date on any Google page, so treat it as unconfirmed.
Unifically still serves google/nano-banana-2 today. Deprecated Google models do get shut down eventually, so don't start new projects on it.
Which one should you use?
Our view, from the prices and the Arena numbers above:
- New project: Nano Banana 2.1. It is cheaper and ranks higher. There is no trade-off to weigh for standard ratios.
- Existing Nano Banana 2 integration: migrate now. You save about 40% per image and get better output.
- Panoramas, 21:9, or seeded output: stay on Nano Banana 2 for those jobs only.
- Nano Banana Pro: hard to justify on these numbers. It trails 2.1 on both boards at more than three times the 1K price. Keep it only where your own tests show it wins on your prompts.
- Top quality regardless of family: GPT Image 2 ranks #3 on both boards and is live on Unifically.
The real disappointment is the panorama gap. Google's best fix in 2.1 is for exactly the wide formats our 2.1 endpoint doesn't take, so wide-banner users get the old model's quality for now.
What to watch next
- Arena moving off "preliminary." With about 5,000 text-to-image votes, the 1328 can still shift. We'll re-check the boards and update the card.
- A Nano Banana 2 shutdown date. If Google posts one on its deprecations page, this post gets the date and a deadline.
- Wider ratios on our 2.1 endpoint. If panorama ratios or
seedarrive, the "keep Nano Banana 2" advice goes away.
