What is Suno Cover?
Suno Cover takes a song you already have and produces a new rendition of it in a different style. The source is either a clip from a previous Suno generation, sent as clip_id, or an audio file you host, sent as audio_url. You then say what the new version should sound like: a short brief such as "Jazz style cover with saxophone" in Simple mode, or a fuller direction in Custom mode. The result is a new track that follows the source song but swaps the genre, instrumentation or feel. It is the quickest way to hear one composition as a rock track, an acoustic ballad and a lo-fi beat without rewriting it each time.
Key features of Suno Cover
Four parts of the request do most of the work.
Cover a Suno clip or any hosted file
Send clip_id to cover something you generated earlier, or audio_url to cover your own recording. Both go through the same suno-ai/cover model.
Two ways to describe the new style
Simple mode reads a short brief from gpt_description_prompt. Custom mode reads a detailed direction from prompt, which gives you more say over arrangement and instruments.
Vocal or instrumental output
Leave make_instrumental off for a sung cover, or turn it on for a backing-only version. Add a title so the cover is easy to tell apart from the source.
Covers in your own sound
Set mv to chirp-custom and pass a custom_model with a name and 6 to 24 reference audio URLs. The cover is rendered in the style of those tracks.
What Suno Cover is best for
Genre swaps
Hear the same song as jazz, acoustic, metal or synth-pop before deciding on a final arrangement.
Karaoke and backing versions
Turn on
make_instrumentalto get a vocal-free cover of a track for rehearsal or sing-along apps.Alternate versions for social video
Publish one song in several styles for different platforms or audiences without writing new music.
Pitching arrangements
Bring two or three cover styles of a demo to a client or label and let them pick a direction.
Restyling your own recordings
Upload a rough phone recording through
audio_urland get a produced version in the style you describe.
Suno Cover use cases
A music app can add a "restyle" button under every generated song that sends the track's clip_id to Cover with a genre picked from a dropdown. A karaoke service can take licensed or user-owned audio, request instrumental covers, and serve them as backing tracks. A marketing team can render one jingle in three styles and test which version performs best in ads. If a cover comes back shorter than you need, pass it on to the Suno Extend API to continue it from the last bar.
How does a Suno cover work? A real test
A Suno cover keeps the song you give it and re-records it in the style you describe. To show what that means in practice we covered a track generated on the Suno API on October 19, 2026, through the UnificAlly MCP, at the default settings. Both clips are the real outputs.
Source song ("Ship It at 2AM", indie pop, chirp-hawk, 2:50):
Cover (3:22, billed $0.06):
Request: mv chirp-hawk, custom false, audio_url pointing at the source MP3, gpt_description_prompt "Slow jazz ballad cover with brushed drums, upright bass, piano and saxophone, smoky female vocals", title "Ship It at 2AM (Jazz Cover)". The task returned two cover clips for the one request; the first is embedded.
What came back: a 3:22 ballad in place of a 2:50 pop track; listen above to judge how much of the brief's brushed drums, upright bass, piano and saxophone landed. One thing to know before you build on Simple mode: with only a description prompt, the cover also rewrote the lyrics to fit the jazz brief (the clip's returned prompt field holds a new lyric sheet about a bar and smoke, not the original's late-night deploy). If the words must survive, run Custom mode (custom true) and pass the original lyrics in prompt with the style in tags; that is how Custom mode treats prompt on every Suno route.
Suno Cover vs Extend, Remaster and Mashup
Four Suno operations take an existing clip and give you a new one. They are searched together, so here is which one changes what. Rates are UnificAlly's per request.
| Suno Cover | Suno Extend | Suno Remaster | Suno Mashup | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Model ID | suno-ai/cover | suno-ai/extend | suno-ai/remaster | suno-ai/mashup |
| Rate per request | $0.06 | $0.06 | $0.06 | $0.06 |
| Input | clip_id or audio_url | clip_id or audio_url plus a timestamp | clip_id | Two clips |
| What changes | Genre, instruments, vocal style; lyrics too in Simple mode | Nothing before the timestamp; new material after it | Audio quality and mix only | Two songs blended into one |
| What stays | Melody and structure | The original audio | The whole performance | Elements of both |
| Instrumental option | make_instrumental | make_instrumental | No | No |
| Custom model (your own style) | Yes, $0.64 | Yes, $0.64 | No | No |
Pick Cover for a style change, Extend when the song is too short, Remaster when the song is right but sounds rough, and Mashup when you have two songs and want one.

FAQ
Questions fréquentes sur Suno Cover
It makes a new version of a song you already have. You point it at a clip_id from an earlier Suno generation or at an audio_url for your own file, describe the new style, and the job returns a cover in that style.
In Simple mode (custom false) write a short brief in gpt_description_prompt, such as "Jazz style cover with saxophone". In Custom mode (custom true) put a more detailed direction in prompt, such as "Acoustic guitar cover with soft vocals".
Yes. Host the file and pass it as audio_url instead of clip_id. The rest of the request is the same.
Yes. Set make_instrumental to true and the cover comes back without vocals, which suits karaoke tracks and background versions.
chirp-hawk (v6), chirp-hawk-wild (v6 Wild) and chirp-goose (v6 Mini). Setting mv to chirp-custom and passing a custom_model with 6 to 24 reference tracks renders the cover in the style of your own music. That custom model is trained per request, so send the same object each time you want that style.
Cover replaces the arrangement of the whole song with a new one. Extend keeps the original and continues it from a timestamp. Use Cover for a genre change and Extend when the song is simply too short.
Suno's own definition is a new version of an existing song that keeps the melody while the style changes, like a cover by another artist. In the Suno app the feature is in beta for Pro and Premier subscribers and limited to songs you created; through this API you send any clip_id from your own generations or an audio_url you host, and the cover comes back as a normal task at $0.06.
Not always. In Simple mode the model reads only your description and may write new lyrics to suit the new style; our jazz test on this page did exactly that. To keep the words, use Custom mode with the original lyrics in prompt and the style in tags.
Through the API the usual causes are an audio_url that is not a public https link, a clip_id from a different account, or a style brief that contradicts the source so strongly that the result drifts. Suno itself notes the app feature can take a few tries to get right. Failed tasks are not billed, so re-run with a clearer brief or switch to Custom mode.
