What is Nano Banana 2?

Nano Banana 2 is Google's Gemini 3.1 Flash Image model (gemini-3.1-flash-image). It generates and edits images from a text prompt plus optional reference images, and you set the output size with one resolution parameter:

  • 1K. Fast drafts, social tiles, large-volume use.
  • 2K. Sharper detail, presentation graphics, web hero art.
  • 4K. Maximum detail, print-ready output, large displays.

Google's top-end sibling is Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image), and its newer Flash-class successor is Nano Banana 2.1. Both are compared below.

Is Nano Banana 2 deprecated?

Yes. Google's changelog of October 6, 2026 marks gemini-3.1-flash-image as deprecated and recommends migrating to gemini-nano-banana-2.1. As of October 7, 2026, Google's deprecations page lists no shutdown date. UnificAlly still serves google/nano-banana-2, and existing integrations keep working. We will update this post if Google sets a date.

How to call Nano Banana 2

The API is async: POST a task, then poll it or pass a callback_url.

curl -X POST https://api.unifically.com/v1/tasks \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "model": "google/nano-banana-2",
    "input": {
      "prompt": "A campaign banner for a coffee brand: espresso cups lined up on warm linen, morning light",
      "aspect_ratio": "8:1",
      "resolution": "4K",
      "seed": 42
    }
  }'

The response returns a task_id. Poll GET /v1/tasks/<task_id> until status is completed, then read the image URL from data.output. Add "dry_run": true to the request body to get the price without running the job. Full parameters: Nano Banana 2 docs.

To switch to Nano Banana 2.1, change the model to google/nano-banana-2.1, keep the aspect ratio to 1:1, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 3:4, or auto, and drop seed.

Things to know about Nano Banana 2

  • Defaulting to 4K on every call. 4K costs more than double 1K and is not always visibly different at small display sizes. Draft at 1K, re-render the keepers at 4K.
  • Panoramas. Nano Banana 2 takes 1:4, 4:1, 1:8, 8:1, and 21:9; Nano Banana 2.1 on UnificAlly does not. Keep banner and strip jobs here.
  • Long in-image text. Short headlines and labels render well. Multi-paragraph copy is better added in post.
  • Too many references. Reference images compete for influence. Send the few that anchor the look.
  • Stripping SynthID. The invisible watermark is part of Google's AI provenance signal. Pipelines that strip metadata also strip it, so keep it where compliance matters.
